๐Ÿ“˜ Introduction to $V Options

Full details about the options seasons.

Options are powerful financial instruments that provide users with the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell an asset at a predetermined price within a defined timeframe. Within The Vault protocol, options serve as a bridge between ecosystem participation and token access, encouraging long-term engagement and sustainable growth.

How Options Work

An option is a contract that grants its holder the right to purchase (call option) or sell (put option) a specific asset at a defined price (strike price) before or on a specified date (expiration date). In The Vault system, users receive call options, allowing them to acquire $V tokens at a fixed price during a designated period (Figure 5.1).

Key terms:

  • Call option: the right to buy an asset.
  • Strike price: the fixed price at which the asset can be bought.
  • Expiration date: the last date on which the option can be exercised.
  • Spot price: the current market price of the asset.
  • In the money: when the spot price is above the strike price.
  • Out of the money: when the spot price is below the strike price.

A $V call option gives the right, but not the obligation, to buy $V at a fixed strike price; the option is in the money when the spot price is above the strike and out of the money when it is below.

Understanding Seasons

Seasons define earning periods and exercise terms for vPoints. vPoints provide the right to purchase $V during an announced exercise window. They are not $V, cannot be locked, and do not become $V automatically.

The lifecycle of a season:

  • Users engage with The Vault products (e.g., providing liquidity).
  • Users earn points based on their participation.
  • The exercise terms specify the eligible points token, points required per $V, strike price and window.
  • During the window, holders can exercise eligible vPoints and pay the strike price to purchase $V.

From Points to Tokens: The Full Process

  • Participation: users interact with The Vault products, such as staking in Kamino Multiply, and accumulate points over the course of a season.
  • Check the terms: the exercise page shows the eligible points token, points required per $V and whether exercise is open.
  • Purchase: exercise eligible vPoints and pay the displayed vSOL strike price for the $V amount shown.
  • Exercise window: purchases are available only during the announced window. Check the live page for current availability (Figure 5.2).

Earn eligible vPoints, check the exercise window and season terms, then choose whether to pay the strike price to purchase V. vPoints cannot be locked; purchased V can be locked.

Figure 5.2: From participation to $V

Historical-style calculation example only; these are not current exercise terms:

  • Suppose the eligible vPoints balance entitles a user to purchase 10,000 $V.
  • At an illustrative strike of 0.00066 vSOL per $V, the exercise payment is 6.6 vSOL before transaction fees.
  • The user receives 10,000 $V only after completing the purchase.
  • The points required and actual strike price depend on the applicable season.
  • If the token trades above the strike price, the user can mint tokens at a discount.

Benefits of Using Options

  • Aligned incentives: users who contribute to the protocol earn token access aligned with their participation, rather than receiving free distributions. This creates a fairer and more merit-driven ecosystem.
  • Informed timing: the exercise window allows users to assess market conditions before deciding whether to mint, supporting more thoughtful token acquisition.
  • Transparent mechanics: check the announced exercise terms and the quote before purchasing $V.
  • Strategic treasury growth: funds paid to exercise options go directly to the treasury, supporting sustainable protocol development.

Risks

  • Expiration risk: options are only valid during a specific window. Participating in the season ensures users are prepared for that opportunity.
  • Market risk: if the token trades below the strike price, it may be more economical to purchase on the open market. This reinforces prudent decision-making.
  • Volatility and protocol risk: earning points through DeFi can expose funds to market, smart contract and liquidation risks. See Risks.
  • Price discovery: buying options externally may involve a premium. Farming allows users to access them at the original conversion rate through contribution.

Summary

The Vault options are a strategic mechanism to distribute $V tokens in a sustainable, incentive-aligned manner. They reward ecosystem participants and ensure the long-term health of the protocol through controlled, educational token access.

By understanding how options work and the structure of each season, users can make informed, empowered decisions that support both their personal goals and the growth of The Vault community.
